Updating Lync 2013

August 20, 2014 by · 34 Comments

Upon looking at visitor statistics for this blog one of the reoccurring trends is the amount of traffic to articles like Updating Lync Phone Edition Devices after Microsoft releases a new round of Lync updates.  It can sometimes be difficult to successfully navigate through the various updates which follow different release schedules which are sometimes bundled together with other Office releases, so hopefully this article can bring some additional clarity to the subject.

This article will continually be updated to serve as both a source of new update information as well as a history of all past updates for both client and server platforms.  Releases for Qualified IP Phones will continue to be tracked in their original articles so this article will only cover the Microsoft-released server and client releases. The ‘Updates’ tag can be used as a quick route to all of these articles.  Keeping this data up-to-date and accurate is an ongoing process feel free to leave comments regarding any errors or dead links.

One thing to understand is that for some products Microsoft will continue to leave multiple previous versions online on their download sites, while others (namely Lync Phone Edition) are removed an only the latest cumulative releases are provided.

Lync 2013 Server Updates

Download

As Microsoft only provides the latest releases for the server components then the following two links are always updated with the most recent information and can be used as a definitive source of the latest server updates.

Typically one does not need worry about the individual components as the LyncServerUpdateInstaller.exe is the ideal package to download and run on any servers.  This tool will locate and upgrade only the applicable components on each Lync server it is executed on locally.

Installation

At this point in the product cycle there is no real value in documenting the steps which have been already covered on various other websites for basic installations (like here and here) to more complex articles covering Enterprise Edition pools with mirrored databases.

The important points to understand are the following:

  • Use the LyncServerUpdateInstaller referenced above to make life easy.
  • Start inside-out and work from Front End servers toward Edge servers.
  • Do not forget to update and verify the backend SQL database for each Enterprise Edition pool that is patched

Component History

For occasions when working with the individual packages is desired then the following table covers each cumulative update release with links to the original Knowledge Base articles for each new component.

This matrix provides a visual aid to when and how often some of the various Lync components are updated as cumulative releases will typically not refresh every single server component.  The official package version numbers will always be in the format of 5.0.8308.xxx but the 5.0 has been truncated fro the following table for spacing purposes.

  • Be aware that although the KB articles are still online for earlier Cumulative Update releases the download pages are the same page for each successive release.  Thus previous CU releases are no longer available for download as the new package replaces each previous version.

Great summary, thanks for that helpful page. Good to see the 'official' CU number that Microsoft always try to hide 🙂

  2. Thomas says:

Thanks for sharing these detailed and valuable informations.

  3. Jeff Schertz says:

Technically we are encouraged to ignore that nomenclature but it's still used so frequently in the field I find it helpful to have a reference to cross-check it against. Plus the Exchange team still uses numbered CUs.

  4. Michael says:

Thanks for this useful info! Is this updated because there are new updates I think…

  5. Bose says:

Nice information Jeff. It would help if you can update the latest relases of 2015 as far as Server 2013/2010 CUs are concerned.

    • Jeff Schertz says:

I’ve updated the article, but I do not plan to add any of the Skype for Business updates as (1) they are still beta/tech preview and (2) I’ll start a new article for the SfB product releases.

      • Bose says:

Thanks for the prompt reply Jeff. Glad to see the CUs updated till the latest releases for Lync 2010/2013 etc. Yes I would agree that SfB should be a new article itself.

Thanks once again for all your efforts and time on keeping this updated.

        Regards
        Bose

  6. Canzone says:

That’s golden info, Jeff. Thanks for sharing!

Do you know if Microsoft keeps history versions for rollback purposes? I’ve downloaded Lync 14.0.10 for Mac and it stopped working, and I found web threads reporting the same behavior. I’d like to roll back to a previous version but found none at MS download page.

    • Canzone says:

Sorry, mistyped. The faulty version is the latest, 14.0.11.

    • Jeff Schertz says:

The Microsoft Download page will always replace the older versions when a new cumulative update is released. I always recommend to keep a local copy of all releases handy so you can roll back yourself in the event of some issue.

  7. Rose says:

We have two SQL Database ( Principle and mirror), principle shows that update successfully installed and are up to dated. but when I run the command and target the mirror server, the installed version shows blank and does not meet the expected version. Kindly advice

  8. Rock.Star says:

thanks for keeping everything at one place..

    Thanks Jeff

  9. Texeric says:

In your Lync Phone Edition table, the entry (last at this point) for version 4.0.7577.4463 shows 2014, when I think you meant 2015 for the release date. Thanks for having this page!

  10. Martin says:

(would be lost without your website..!!)

hope you can advise… have a large deployment of Lync… IM and Presence for all, and limited Telephony. now at Lync 2007 , shortly going to 2013 or Skype. Came across some CX700`s in our stores… they have Version 3.5.6907.35(2.1) loaded… they wont pull down latest version of software when connected, rebooted or put in the test/quarintine area… is there an intermediate version of software I need to push before going to the latest version.. .4463

    Many thanks

    Martin

  11. Andy says:

The idea that no previous version is downloadable is ridiculous. This suggests that new versions always have at least the same functionality as previous ones. Only an incredibly naive or arrogant Microsoft staffer would actually think this is the case (Maybe I just answered my own question!)

Right now I have the “repeatedly asks for Calendar credentials” bug but no way to downgrade to the previous version. The fixes shown on Microsoft’s support KB are not applicable or don’t work. I need to move backwards from Lync 14.1.1 for Mac somehow.

  12. Tobie Fysh says:

    Hi Jeff,

Any chance of an update with 927 and 933 please 🙂

    regards
    Tobie

  13. M@lik says:

    Hi Jeff,

To upgrade a fresh Lync 2013 (client) deployment to SfB, is it fine to start with SfB (April 2015) or I should start with CU5 (September 2015)? In other words, is April 2015 a cumulative update that includes all previous patches and KBs?

    Regards

  14. Gautam says:

  15. Dev says:

Do you have the Microsoft Lync Phone Edition (Cumulative Update 13). It looks like Contact Card is automatically adding + before all Contact Number ?

Unable to call via phone contact displayed.

but lync client is working fine when dialed from contacts list

  16. LIam Hayes says:

Is this information still pertinent with this release of SQL SP3? Do I still need to do SQL update?

    I have 1 front
    1 edge
    1 temp
    1 OWAS
Do all need to be updated with CU?
I have local SQLon LYNC front and backend SQL on separate dedicated SQL server
Which command needs to be run on which?

    Thanks in advance

  17. Daniel says:

    Hey Jeff,
I still have trouble understanding microsofts article, specifically the install databases bit.
does the edge server in a standard edition lync system require to have the install-csdatabase command run on it? and also same question for the archival/monitoring server

  18. Shaik says:

Hi May I know the CU & HF Number for 5.0.8308.949

LYNC 2013 CU released on Apr’16

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3140582

  19. Nikolas says:

Does anyone have a copy of the CU 1 for Lync Phone Edition?

  20. Mario says:

    Jeff,
Do you have a similar page for Skype for Business Server?
